HMA Intrastate Accreditation Program

The Hawaii Medical Association Continuing Medical Education Facilities Accreditation Committee (HMA CME FAC) is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to accredit intrastate continuing medical education providers.

The HMA CME FAC currently accredits fifteen (15) hospitals and two (2) other organizations, which provide continuing medical education activities on a regular and recurring basis primarily to physicians practicing in the State of Hawaii or the Pacific Rim. Continuing medical education is necessary for re-licensure in the State of Hawaii, and is strongly supported by the American Medical Association through the Physicians Recognition Award.

HMA CME Mission Statement

The CME mission of the Hawaii Medical Association is to support quality patient care through appropriate and timely education with information about current and vital issues of medicine and medical practice for doctors of medicine and osteopathy in Hawaii and the PacificBasin.

The mission is achieved through the Hawaii Medical Association Continuing Medical Education Facilities Accreditation Committee (CME FAC) which is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) as an intrastate accrediting body. The Essentials provide the criteria that medical centers, specialty societies, and other health related organizations must meet to designate continuing medical education credit.

The primary goal of the CME program is to provide quality education based on prioritized needs, continuous evaluation, desired outcomes, and continuous improvement that result in quality patient care. To accomplish this, the CME FAC reviews reports from the accredited CME providers, conducts site surveys, educates the physician and staff members of those entities which provide CME on a regular basis, conducts provider customer satisfaction surveys, and participates in the continuous improvement of CME doctrine on a national level.

The Hawaii Medical Association is also a partner in the Hawaii Consortium of Continuing Medical Education, a joint effort between the Hawaii Medical Association and the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, which sponsors the scientific session of the HMA Annual Meeting, the CME programs of the medical school, and jointly sponsors programs of numerous non-accredited organizations in Hawaii.

How to Become an Accredited Provider

Accreditation is official recognition by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) or by a state medical association that an overall program of continuing medical education for physicians substantially complies with accepted standards for planning, implementing, and evaluating CME activities. The Hawaii Medical Association (HMA) is recognized by the ACCME as the intrastate accrediting body for the state of Hawaii.

The HMA CME FAC may accredit the following types of organizations:
  • Health Care Facility
  • County Medical Society
  • Hospital
  • Voluntary Health Organization
  • Specialty Society
  • Other organizations

An organization must provide continuing medical education activities on a regular and recurring basis in the State of Hawaii and the PacificBasin.  Participants are primarily from the State of Hawaii and the PacificBasin.   There is no minimum annual number of CME activities required for accreditation.  However, an organization must:

  • Develop an overall CME program utilizing the Essential Areas, Elements and Policies and have established a track record of providing CME activities either on its own, or in conjunction with another organization that is accredited to provide category 1 CME activities.  In order to establish this record, an organization may plan and implement educational activities utilizing the Essential Areas, Elements and Policies without granting any CME category 1 credit(s).
  • Demonstrate an overall commitment to its continuing medical education program, including staffing, physician support, budget, and record-keeping.
  • Comply with HMA CME FAC policies and ACCME Essential Areas and Elements.
  • Plan to continue to offer at least one or more educational activities per year.  An organization whose overall CME program consists of an occasional CME activity or whose target audience is on a national scale may find it more feasible to seek joint sponsorship through the Hawaii Consortium of Continuing Medical Education.
An organization is ineligible if:
  • Its programs are devoted to advocacy of unscientific modalities of diagnosis and treatment;
  • Its programs are only through recorded material (printed matter, syllabi, video/audio tapes, textbooks, etc); or
  • Greater than thirty percent (30%) of its program participants are from out of the States of Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, California, or the PacificBasin.
Organizations not eligible for accreditation by the HMA CME FAC may seek accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME).

For further information on the accreditation program email Nathalie George or call (808) 536-7702 extension 103.  Copies of the Pre-Application, Initial Accreditation Application and Self-Study for Accreditation, and the HMA CME FAC Manual are available upon request.

Joint Sponsorship

Organizations with only a limited number of CME activities may be interested in joint sponsorship instead of accreditation. An organization that is not accredited may seek joint sponsorship through the Hawaii Consortium of Continuing Medical Education or another accredited institution/organization that has a joint sponsorship program. Joint sponsorship is often undertaken as a first step toward accreditation.
